frequently asked questions

is educational therapy and tutoring the same?

No. Educational Therapist and content tutors both help clients achieve academic success, however, the training of educational therapists goes beyond content (reading, math, science, social studies, etc.) expertise. Educational therapists have extensive training in assessment/evaluation, behavior management, learning disabilities, case management, intervention design/implementation, and social emotional development. Finally, Educational Therapists help students develop pre-requisite or foundational skills to become more self-directed learners.

Are educational therapists and psychologists the same?

No. Educational Therapists do not diagnose or prescribe medication for conditions such as ADHD or bipolar disorder. Similarly, educational therapists do not administer psychological tests, intelligence tests, or practice psychotherapy. However, Educational Therapists are able to administer informal and formal assessments to build treatment plans to address academic or behavioral challenges and/or to inform Psychologists or other licensed professionals who may conduct a formal evaluation if deemed necessary.

Who can be an educational therapist?

Educational therapists must complete a certification process through the Association of Educational Therapists. This organization reviews the credentials of professionals seeking certification and requires supervision and additional professional development before becoming certified. Educational Therapist who are certified through AET have met the highest level of professional preparation and experience qualifying them to provide personalized remedial instruction and interventions to children and adults with learning and social-emotional-behavioral challenges. How long will my child or i need therapy?

There is no simple answer to this question. The therapeutic process is unique to each individual. Some individuals will respond immediately to treatment, while it may take longer for others. However, the goal for every client (and Therapist) is to eventually fade out of Therapy when the person is able to be more autonomous and self-directed. Those who are ready to be terminated from Therapy will have met their goals, are more self-directed in the learning process, have increased social-emotional competence, and able to self-regulate their behavior..

Does my child have to have a disability to benefit from therapy?

No. All students can benefit from Educational Therapy or Emotional-Behavior Therapy. Students with and without disabilities often experience many of the same challenges. Students without disabilities who experience academic challenges, low self-efficacy, inattention, anxiety, poor motivation, and decreased executive function skills may benefit from working with an educational therapist.
